Cable Box

Every month, millions of cable television subscribers pay fees to the cable companies to rent a cable boxes. Numerous cable companies are taking advantage of consumers by charging fees to rent a set-top box that should cost no more than a DVD player. Consumers are not given a choice to purchase a new cable box or rent a cheaper box from another company. In addition, many consumers are limited in subscribing to certain cable companies.

Years ago, many people were frustrated that telephone companies only allowed their customers to lease their telephones directly from the company. Eventually this practice was deemed illegal and anti-competitive, which is why we are now able to purchase or lease our telephones from a variety of companies, thereby ensuring competition. Currently, however, cable customers throughout the country have been dealing with the same situation and have begun to challenge these unfair practices.

Specifically, Time Warner and Comcast are currently under fire in large multi-district class actions in which their customers are alleging that the practice of requiring cable customers to lease a set-top cable box from them - without providing the option to either purchase the box or rent from another company - violates the antitrust laws of the United States as well as the consumer protection laws of their home states.

While these companies are being challenged, there are many other cable providers who are not. Therefore, if you have been forced to rent a cable box from your cable company, then please contact us so that we can make sure that your rights and those of many other cable subscribers are protected.

When the rights of a group of people have been violated, they can file a class action lawsuit seeking compensation for their injuries or asking the court to either require the defendant to take certain action or to require the defendant to stop certain activities in which it is involved. The advantage of a class action is that a group of people with similar claims can present their cases at one time, rather than having to file numerous individual lawsuits.

At Pogust Braslow & Millrood, we regularly handle class action lawsuits. We know that class action lawsuits are highly complicated, and require special skill and expertise in order to obtain the best results possible because defendants fight these cases very hard. At Pogust Braslow & Millrood, protecting our clients is our primary goal, and we fight harder than the defendants to assure that our clients are treated fairly and are compensated for whatever injuries the defendants' conduct has caused.

We thoroughly investigate every class action so our clients are assured that we will hold the responsible party accountable for its actions.
